Tanzanite is violet blue to blue violet variety of the mineral zoisite and it was Tiffany & Co named this blue-violet variety of zoisite in honor of Tanzania, where it was first unearthed. Nowadays other colors and hues of Zoisite are commonly called Tanzanite's. e.g. Green Tanzanite
